We are excited to welcome two elephant calves born at Kariega Game Reserve this week. This video shows one of the calves, only a few days old, peeking out from beneath its mother. Video thanks to ranger Jone Fick.

This calf will remain close to its mother and will depend entirely on her milk for the first 3 - 4 months. Calves drink about 10 litres (3 gallons) of milk every day and will continue to get sustenance from the milk for a full two years, and even longer in some cases.

See our blog with close-up pictures of this newborn elephant calf.

Did you have any close-up elephant encounters while on safari at Kariega? We would love to see pictures from your experience. You can share them with us by posting them onto our Facebook page.
