Conservation Through Community Volunteering

The Kariega Foundation offers the unique opportunity for volunteers from around the world to contribute to essential conservation efforts on Kariega Game Reserve and impactful projects in the communities that neighbour the reserve.
Volunteers become part of our united and conservation minded community working together to protect, preserve and benefit our planet, people and wildlife.

The Volunteer Programme Manager lives on-site and together with the team facilitates a seamlessly blended programme demonstrating conservation through community – the philosophy of the Kariega Foundation.

The Kariega Foundation Conservation Centre

Up to sixteen volunteers are hosted at The Kariega Foundation Conservation Centre, a homestead bordering Kariega Game Reserve, with breath taking views and frequent wildlife sightings. The swimming pool, patio, boma and dining hall facilities offer spaces for relaxation and connection after each productive and purposeful day. 

The on-site permaculture vegetable garden provides an added opportunity for volunteers to get hands in the soil and home-grown nutrients into the body.

Conservation and Community Activities

Over the course of a few weeks, volunteers will assist with many diverse research projects that assist the ecology department with wildlife and habitat management decision making; get physical as they tackle alien plant control, soil erosion, road clearing or any of the other activities needed to manage a large and wild habitat; and be inspired by working up close with wild animals and when needed assisting with veterinary procedures.

In the community hearts are lifted through collaborate efforts to spread love and the spirit of ubuntu and improve the lives others. Weekly activities include working in community gardens, helping in soup kitchens, supporting social and emotion lessons at school and sport in the afternoons, domestic animal care outreach and infrastructure upgrades to ECD Centres or community facilities.
