What to Expect on a South African Safari Break?
Kariega Game Reserve spans across 10,000 hectares of pristine wilderness, and is home to the Big 5, as well as zebra, giraffe, hippo, multiple species of antelope and an abundance of birdlife. Kariega is a family-owned and operated private game reserve, giving it a warm and welcoming atmosphere.
The nearest airport is Port Elizabeth which is an 80 minute drive away. The seaside village of Kenton-on-Sea is 10 minutes drive and the town of Makhanda (Grahamstown) can be reached in half an hour. The distance from Cape Town is approximately 870km and 1,000km from Johannesburg.
Set on African plains with magnificent hills and dramatic river valleys the wilderness area combines spectacular vistas with an abundance of wildlife. The reserve includes five different ecosystems, resulting in extremely high game carrying capacities. This means that Kariega's game viewing and birding experience are unsurpassed in the Eastern Cape. Having two major rivers flow through the reserve (the Kariega and Bushman's rivers) allows us to offer river cruises, canoeing and fishing in addition to twice daily guided game drives.
While on safari with the experienced guide, you might be lucky enough to spot our newest rhino calf Siya! He is the fourth calf born to our much-loved poaching survivor Thandi and the name-sake of our equally loved Springbok rugby captain Siya Kolisi.
You could also spend time watching the lions, including four cubs who were born in June 2020. Kariega is also well-known for close up encounters with elephants, buffalo, giraffe and a variety of other wildlife.
