Rhino-Super-Mom Thandi has given birth to her second calf and everyone at Kariega Game Reserve is bursting with pride and joy.

The excitement unfolded at Kariega last week when it was noted that Thembi was on her own grazing with the rest of the crash, while Thandi had disappeared in the same area where she gave birth to Thembi two years ago.

Searching for Rhino Poaching Survivor Thandi

On Friday evening, with excited anticipation, Dr. William Fowlds and a team from Kariega went in search of Thandi. With the use of a drone, they managed to locate her and discovered the exciting news!

The birth of Thandi’s second calf was particularly sentimental to the Rushmere family who had gathered together to celebrate the life of Colin Rushmere, visionary and founder of Kariega Game Reserve. Colin passed away on 20 January 2017. The birth of Thandi’s second calf is a beautiful testament to his legacy that lives on as a joyful reminder of a special man and an inspired life.

Thandi’s story is one of trauma, courage, perseverance, and triumph. We are incredible proud of her … and grateful too! Thank you to ranger Daniel for this beautiful photo taken of Thandi in August 2016.
