Great Malaria-Free Family Safari
If you are looking for a family-friendly safari experience, then Kariega Game Reserve Main Lodge is the perfect destination. Our Big 5 Private Game Reserve is located in the malaria-free Eastern Cape region of South Africa in an area called the Sunshine Coast. Our wilderness area includes two rivers and we can see the warm sparkling ocean from Main Lodge. Kariega is situated on the popular Garden Route and the nearest airport in Port Elizabeth is a short 80 minute flight from Cape Town.
Our thanks to the Theron family for the lovely pictures.
Malaria-Free Family Safari Accommodation
The safari accommodation at our relaxed and friendly Main Lodge is in spacious log chalets, each set in the African bush with large viewing decks overlooking the reserve. The chalets provide a comfortable and private space for families to connect between game drives and after dinner. Most chalets have two or three air-conditioned bedrooms, each with its own bathroom, and can accommodate up to six people. We also have two four bedroom chalets which can sleep families of up to eight people in four bedrooms. Each chalet has a spacious lounge and living area with an open fireplace and satellite TV. There is a kitchenette with a small fridge and facilities to make coffee and tea. Some chalets have private pools.
Families enjoy traditional meals in the restaurant or outdoor boma, both a short walk from each chalet. Food is served buffet-style which means that everyone can choose from the variety of options. There is also a children's menu. Drinks are not included at Main Lodge and families can order from the waitrons or at the bar. The restaurant area also has a viewing deck, two lounges, a spa, gym and outdoor pool. There is free WiFi available here but not in the chalets.
Malaria-Free Family Safari Activities
Main Lodge offers a variety of safari activities for both adults and children. The highlight is always the twice daily game drives on open vehicles with experienced guides. Our rangers are fantastic with children and enjoy answering their many questions. Other activities on offer are canoeing on the river, guided bush walks (over 16), river fishing and a boat cruise.
Main Lodge also offers a Kids on Safari programme with specialised children's activities. Each child under 12 receives a colourful drawstring bag which contains their Kids on Safari booklet and a pencil case filled with goodies. The programme is designed to entertain and inspire children to learn about wildlife and their natural surroundings. There are even pockets in the book for storing dung samples. Yes, animal poo!
Most children encourage their parents to leave them with the Kids on Safari coordinator, however, parents are welcome to join the activities if they choose. Children are all given a junior ranger certificate at the end of their stay. There is also a popular edu-trail within the boundary of the lodge and an indoor and outdoor play area. We are in the process of upgrading the indoor area.
