Red Era and The Diceros Project: Inspired by Thandi
Three-years-on from Tragic Rhino Poaching at Kariega
During March we will celebrate Thandi’s amazing recovery and highlight how it has fueled public passion for this species and motivated people from far flung places to get actively involved in helping to save the rhino. We are so proud to publish some of the wonderful achievements and projects that have been inspired by this brave rhino. Our sincere thanks to everyone who has, and continues to fight for our rhino.
"Thandi's story of sheer determination and will to survive represents hope in the face of hopelessness. This story stands as testimony to the worst and the best of human attitudes towards animals." Dr William Fowlds.
Red Era and The Diceros Project: Inspired by Thandi
Thanks to Tamlyn McMullan for providing the update on how she was inspired to get involved in rhino conservation after the poaching of three rhino at Kariega on 2 March 2012. Tamlyn is pictured below with Dr Fowlds and her sister, Kristen at Kariega.
After the poaching the sister team have set up Red Era and The Diceros Project. They provide marketing and fundraising assistance to various rhino organisations including those assisting anti-poaching units (APU's), rhino orphanages and rehabilitation centres.
Inspired to Make a Difference
"Most follow world headlines but few really actually do something to make a change. Many of us agree with what is wrong and what is right but willingly sit and watch from afar in disbelief. Crippled by feeling helpless. What can one person do to make a difference? What can I do? Where would I begin?
On 2 March 2012 when three rhino were poached at Kariega Game Reserve leaving Thandi as the only survivor the reality of rhino poaching hit us like a 10 ton truck. We had to do something.
Shortly after when we saw an email inviting anyone to willingly throw themselves out of a plane to raise funds for rhino - we signed up and got involved with Skydive For Rhinos!
Since then we have supported and run events to help raise funds for for rhino conservation.
Thandi has and always will remain an inspiration for us. Her story has been one we will continue to carry with us for the rest of our lives. We will never give up, like Thandi. We will continue to fight every day.
